Glennis and I have been chatting recently about increasing our involvement in charity & philanthropic efforts. It's important to us, not only collectively as an organization but also individually, to "give back." Much of this began after a few specific instances last year (see posts "A Special Cause", "It's the third annual Blog Day!", and "A Generous Gift"), to which many folks responded and participated in (both inside and outside our network).
Given the robust community we have--the many talented content creators, the passionate Posties, the giving advertisers--we have a tremendous opportunity to get involved in some projects that could make a difference in the lives of others. Details of a couple of projects will be revealed over the next couple of months, but in the meantime I'd love to get some input from some of you guys:
- Are you actively involved in charity efforts, and if so then which organizations?
- Do you use your blog to increase awareness about certain causes?
- Do you have a blog devoted specifically to charitable causes?
- How would you see utilizing IZEA to heighten others' visibility of charitable efforts?
- What inspires you or motivates you to get involved in charity work?
Also, feel free to pass along any "out-of-the-box" ideas you might have about how we can partner-up with bloggers, Advertisers, and organizations in philanthropic efforts. You never know...we just might use them.

I'm actively trying to raise $1800 for breast cancer. I'll be participating in a 26+ mile walk in October.
I have both a donation page here

and created an awareness page with videos here at squidoo

I support the American Cancer Society and the ALS Association. I participate in Daffodil Days every year for the ACS and Walk to Defeet for ALS.
I link to both charities on the sidebar of my blogs under "do something good" and my readers have been kind enough to donate whenever I let them know that the events are approaching.

I am on the board of directors for the charity ChooseANeed located at http://www.chooseaneed.org/
I recently wrote a blog post about it here: http://www.greatpcs.net/2008/01/13/choose-a-need/
ChooseANeed is a great charity (maybe i'm a bit biased!) because the people who donate choose exactly where the money goes. There are needs posted on the site and you pick a need to donate directly to, many of which can be funded by one person! We are doing such things as building wells to provide clean water in various parts of Africa, doing anti-malaria projects and also micro-finance projects to encourage poor villagers to start businesses and earn money. We have also assisted with projects such as providing college scholarships in developing countries and providing plane travel for a sick child to receive surgery from Doctors in the United States. All administrative costs are broken out separately and are minimal so 100% of what users give goes directly to the need they are funding!
I think ChooseANeed is great because it provides a way to do targeted giving, and you can even write us to suggest needs that are close to your heart and they may get posted on the site. ChooseANeed is a registered 501(c)3 organization so all deductions are tax-deductible as allowed under U.S. law.
